Introducing through art, craft and drama
(Introducing New Language (Warm-up Activities))

Activities which introduce new vocabulary, collocations and sentence structures through art, draft and drama.

Whose eye is this?

  • Ask children to look into the eyes of their neighbour (do the same, look into the eyes of one of the children) and draw his/her eye with all its details, covering the whole sheet (the teacher is drawing on the blackboard).
  • Draw together with children, describing what you are drawing (eye, eyelashes, eyebrow, pupil).
  • When everyone is finished, point at the eye on the blackboard asking: "Whose eye is this?" and answer: "It’s Klárka’s eye."
  • Ask children one by one to raise their drawings above their heads and keep asking the same question: "Whose eye is this? Is it Martin’s eye?" Encourage children to answer Yes/No, or possibly, Yes, it is./No, it isn’t. They may also answer: "Yes, it’s Martin’s eye/No it isn’t Martin’s eye, it’s Katka’s eye." (However, the last version of their answers is not necessary, as this is the introduction of new language. Move on to practising in another stage of the teaching process.)

Draw the Word

  • Prepare a number of English words with interesting and imagination-raising pronunciation. Simultaneously, make them words you want children to learn, e.g. a hedgehog.
  • Ask children to draw a picture of what they imagine when hearing this word, what they think it means.
  • When they are finished, have them compare their pictures. Walk around the children and ask them: "What is it?" and praise them.
  • Eventually, tell the children what the word really means, and show them a picture: "It’s a hedgehog."

Follow the Instructions

  • Tell children what to do and demonstrate it at the same time: "Please cut out a yellow circle. Now cut out 10 yellow slips." (show the number on your fingers). "Glue the circle in the middle of the white paper and then glue the yellow slips around the circle. What is it? It’s a beautiful sun! Well done."

coloured paper, scissors, crayons

SAYING HELLO

  • Bring puppets into the class and use them for a little play when they meet each other, exchange greetings, and introduce themselves by their names.
  • Play the scene several times, and exchange the pairs of puppets. You may also replace the puppets with something else (toys; a paper figure cut out of paper and glued onto a wood stick).

Screenplay:

  • A: „Hello.“
  • B: „Hello.“
  • A: „My name’s Edie. What’s your name?“
  • B: „My name’s Peggie.“
