BLIND COUNT
(Mathematics)

Subject: Mathematics
Cross-curricular links: English language
Target language: one, two, three, four, five
Time: 10-15 minutes
Materials: a box (or similar container e.g. a tin can, glass jar etc), marbles, stones, buttons or similar

  • Show the children you have some marbles in a bag and a box. Let the children hear the sound of a marble dropping into the box.
  • Ask the children to close their eyes: "Close your eyes, please." The teacher then drops the marbles into a container one by one - bang, bang...
  • Stop dropping the marbles in and ask the pupils to open their eyes “Open your eyes please.” Ask “How many marbles are there in the box?” The children encourage the children to give their answers.
  • Check immediately by pouring the marbles out and counting them as a class to see how many pupils were correct.

Variation:

Drop the marbles in at varying speeds or mix the items you drop in so the children have to distinguish between sounds as well as count. Say “Only count the marbles please, not the buttons”.
