SUMMER & WINTER STATIONS
(Clothes)
Subject: Humans and their world
Cross-curricular links: English language
Target language: gloves, hat, jacket, shorts, socks, T-shirt, trousers; summer, winter
Time: 15 minutes
Materials: worksheet, flashcards
- Sit the children on the floor.
- Put a picture symbolising summer in one corner of the class room and a picture symbolising winter in the opposite corner. Also put both pictures in the middle.
- Show the children different items of clothing and ask “When do you wear (gloves)?“ then demonstrate that they should move to the relevant symbol, in this case winter.
- If some clothes are worn in both summer and winter, the children move to the pictures in the middle of the classroom.
- Based on this activity the children complete the Venn diagram handout by marking with arrows where each item of clothing belongs. Shorts in the summer, a jacket in the winter and socks in both etc.
- Walk around the room and help or praise the children on their work. Ask the target question again “When do you wear (gloves)?“ to elicit “winter” or “In the winter”.
Variation:
Repeat the stations activity but replace the question “What do you wear in summer/winter?” with “What do you wear when it’s hot/cold?” or create more Venn diagrams perhaps looking at toys, transport and a specific colour.
