CLASSROOM SAFARI
(Animals)
Subject: Humans and their world
Cross-curricular links: English language
Language structures: Can you see a/an (animal)?
Time: 10 minutes
Materials: scrap paper or old toilet rolls, animal flashcards
- Each pupil makes binoculars out of paper tubes/toilet rolls (join two tubes together). The binoculars could be made before the lesson during an activity lesson if time is an issue. Put animal flashcards around the classroom.
- Ask the children to look through their binoculars and ask them to search for a (lion). Say: "Look through your binoculars. Can you see a (lion)?” the children try to find the relevant animal with their binoculars. You will be able to see if all the children are looking and have understood the word (lion) because all the binoculars should be pointing the right way.
- When they find the animal you said, encourage them to respond “Yes, I can” to your original question. You will need to drill this response as a whole class first.
- Repeat the process with other wild animals.
