(Colours)

Subject: Physical education
Cross-curricular links: English language, Humans and their world
Target language: blue, green, orange, pink, purple, red, yellow aj., balloon
Language structures: What colour is it?; It’s (color); It’s a (color) (...).
Time: 10 minutes
Materials: Inflated balloons of various shapes and colours

  • First throw one of the balloons in amongst the pupils, e.g. a red one: “It’s red/it’s a red balloon“.
  • Show the children that the balloon must not touch the ground.
  • The pupils call out the colour of the balloon “It’s red/it’s a red balloon“ each time it falls to them.
  • Then throw in another coloured balloon, e.g. blue “It’s blue/it’s a blue balloon“.
  • Now the children are passing around two balloons.
  • A third balloon can be added, e.g. yellow “It’s yellow/it’s a yellow balloon.“
  • Then remove one of the balloons e.g. the red one, and replace it with a green one.
  • Before the end of the activity throw in all of the balloons you have in amongst the pupils and let them enjoy.

Note:

It is important to pay attention to children’s safety (remind them not to jump out of their chairs to reach a balloon). If you think it necessary it may be safer to play this game either in the gym or in the playground.
