CAN YOU…?
(Verbs and Prepositions of Place)

Subject: Humans and their world
Cross-curricular links: English language
Target language: drive a car, fly, play the guitar, ride a bike, ski, swim
Language structures: Yes, I can/No, I can’t; I don’t know.
Time: 10 minutes
Materials: three cards

  • Students are gathered in the centre of the classroom. The teacher spreads three cards with: YES. NO. I DON’T KNOW (the symbol for YES being “?”; for NO “x”; and for I DON’T KNOW “?”) around the classroom.
  • Ask the students a question, e.g. “Can you swim?” Students run to the card that represents their answer in reality. If they do not know the answer or cannot reply to some questions (“Can your sister swim?” - they do not have a sister), have them go to the I DON’T KNOW card.
  • The teacher walks around individual groups, asking the same question again. He/she expects answers: "Yes, I can./No, I can’t./I don’t know." He/she may repeat the question until all members of a group answer correctly (be aware of changes in speaker).
  • Then, he/she asks another questions and students run to the card that represents their answer.

Note:

You cannot always verify the answers. Primarily, he/she focus on linguistic correctness, rather than material one. It is possible to ask questions in only second person singular, thus avoiding using HE/SHE pronouns. The focus then is purely on practising the first person singular.
