LET’S COOK
(Food)

Subject: Humans and their world
Cross-curricular links: English language
Time: 10 minutes
Materials: flashcards, a large cooking pot/a drawing of one on the board

  • Put the flashcards into a bag and show the children your big cooking pot.
  • Tell the children that they are going to make soup “Let’s make soup.“
  • Each pupil takes a picture of one of the ingredients from the bag for the whole class to name.
  • Ask the class to vote with a show of hands whether they like each item and whether it should go in the soup “Put your hand up if you like (tomatoes)” “Put your hand up if you want (tomatoes) in the soup”.
  • Count the hands as a class and go with the majority. Put the ingredients into the soup/pot and mix.
  • When the soup is ready, i.e you have used all the flashcards, ask the children to try it “Who wants to taste the soup?“
  • Pretend to pour the soup into a bowl and offer it around. Ask whether the children like it “Do you like the soup?“ and elicit “Yes I do, No I don’t”.

Variation:

Repeat the process in groups and see how different the soups are. Ask the class to vote on the best soup asking “Do you like this soup?“ encouraging a show of hands. Note, the children are not allowed to vote for themselves. Reward the group whose soup receives the most votes.
