NAME CARDS
(Greetings and Introducing)

Subject: Humans and their world
Cross-curricular links: English language, Art, Humans and the world of work
Time: 10 minutes
Materials: a sheet of white or coloured paper for each child; crayons; scissors

  • Draw a shape on each piece of paper (a star; circle; blossom; etc.) for the students to cut out.
  • Write the name of the students on the card in capital block letters.
  • Let them decorate their cards (with stickers; costume jewellery; etc.).
  • When they are finished, make a little hole in each card for the children to put a string through and tie a knot on its end. You may also use a clothes-pin or a paper clip. Then, have the children attach them to their clothes.

Variation:

Older children may draw a picture/symbol of what/who they dis/like on their cards. It may be an opportunity for practising likes/dislikes. Have children walk around the classroom, asking one another about their hobbies, favourite food, etc.

Note:

When starting to teach a new class, ask your students to make a name card. Use the cards until everyone knows each other’s names. At the beginning of a class distribute the cards and collect them at the end. This provides children with the opportunity to learn colours and shapes: Here’s a golden star! That’s for Susan. Whose is the lovely blue car? Yes, it’s yours, Martin.
