• The children use the magazines to cut out pictures of domestic animals.
• When they finish, ask the children to show you the pictures of animals. Point at the pictures and ask: “What is it?”
• Then spread a large picture of a farm on the floor and ask the children to place their animals onto it. “This is a farm. Place the animals on the farm.”
• Ask the children to close their eyes and make a quick change to the picture, for example, put a chicken into a cowshed.
• After they open their eyes, ask the children to find what has changed on the farm (“What has changed on the farm?”). “What’s different?” “Look carefully.” Praise children even for simple answers such as “Chicken, chicken ...”, and finish the sentence yourself: “Yes, the chicken is here now.” or “The chicken is in a cowshed now. It got lost. Where’s its mummy?” etc.

Extension Activity 1:

Ask the children how many chickens, sheep, cows…there are on the farm.

Extension Activity 2:

Students draw/cut out pictures of objects and people that may appear on a farm. During the next lesson, they put the pictures onto their farm together.

Tip:

Pictures of animals may be fastened with blu-tack, so that they may be moved around freely. Eventually, the picture of the farm can be mounted on the classroom wall, allowing repetition and extension of the vocabulary.

Variation:

The same activity may be used when introducing exotic and wild animals.
